The Challenges of Open-Concept Living

Has anyone else ever opened up a couple or more rooms to be open-concept and then thought “Dammit! Now I need to redecorate the other room!” If so, you’re not alone.

After removing the wall between our kitchen and dining room during our kitchen renovation, I’m now struggling with how to make the spaces flow as one space. The dining room was decorated about three years ago in a pale grey on the walls and dark grey ceiling with white beams and warm wood windows. The space was meant to be cozy and atmospheric, and at the time grey was today’s “white”.

But even over the past three years, my tastes have changed. Maybe it’s the influence of image after image of white farmhouse style rooms I’ve seen on HGTV and in every magazine and store. But it has had an influence on my style, and so the kitchen is going to be much lighter and brighter with off-white walls, warm grey cabinets and a white window.

But these two looks don’t go! So now I want to re-think the dining room. And I haven’t even mentioned the living room yet! This is one of the problems with renovating a live-in flip. If you take too long, you end up wanting to start again on those room you started with once you reach the end!

So what does this mean for us? Well, much to my husband’s dismay, we’ll be getting our rollers out once again to re-paint the dining room, living room and sun room! And dare I say that one day I’d also like to swap all the oak trim we replaced over the last three years for white painted trim!

Have you ever had this problem? Leave a comment if you have, I’d love to know!

Stay tuned for more updates on the kitchen/dining/living/sun room makeover! 😉
